Fantasia Ring

The Story Behind my Fantasia Ring by Jeanne Tran

My boyfriend and I are just another pair of college kids chugging through school. We haven't been dating very long but as cliché as it may sound, we knew this was it, from the beginning.

Jeanne and th boyfriend

Here's the thing: I'm a slightly psychotic Disney fan and my boyfriend knows this. I grew up with Disney movies, went to Disneyland frequently, worked there and my career goals include them as well.

So when we moved to the Pacific Northwest, we said our fond farewell to Disneyland and moved to a new city - one that neither of us has even visited - and moved into an apartment, which neither of us has ever seen. Risky? Perhaps. But what's life without some excitement?

Luckily, we love our new surroundings and so do our kids (the four-legged, furry types!)

After living together, naturally the topic of marriage arose. However, we realized that marrying wouldn't be optimal until we finished school. A long engagement was decided upon, with a unique yet affordable ring in mind.

Thus began months of research, comparing jewelers, settings, stones... the works. We wanted something different, which eventually led us to moissanite and a custom setting. (After all, where would I possibly find a pre-made setting with Mickey on it?)

This is where Joe and his amazing crew came in. They worked with me extensively to make sure that my dream ring turned out exactly as I pictured it. After months of e-mails, the ring was finally realized. It turned out better than I even imagined. They couldn't have done a better job.

My boyfriend hasn't officially proposed yet, and so the ring just sits on our bookshelf, taunting me. I hope he proposes soon, because I can't restrain myself much longer! There's no rush though, I suppose. We're still young.

Thank you to everyone who helped in the process. You were all really great and I hope to work with you again soon. I mean, I need a matching wedding band, right? ;)

Sincerely,
Jeanne (and the boyfriend)

The Story Behind the Fantasia Ring by Joseph Schubach

For Jeanne's ring, we started with several images of different rings that Jeanne liked. She explained to us what elements she wanted from each: the flower prongs with small accent diamonds (that holds the main center stone), the pink princess cut sapphire side stones, the shape of the center stone, the baguette diamonds on the sides, the small pave accent diamonds as well as the overall dimensions she was looking for. We took these ideas and came up with a first draft of what the ring would look like.

Fantasia CAD rendering

With the CAD renderings, we were able to see exactly how the ring was going to turn out: size, shapes, dimensions, etc. Then we made some adjustments. For instance, we originally started with 3.5mm pink princess cut sapphires on the sides and later changed them to 3.0mm sapphires since the larger stones made the overall piece too wide and bulky.

Other changes that we made throughout the design process included adding the small ring just under the flower shape prongs; squaring off the bottom of the shank (which made a huge difference in the look of the overall piece - a great choice); updated baguette sizes; pave diamond sizes and the overall dimensions of the ring.

Design changes not only help with the way the look of the completed piece overall but also help keep costs down. Even a minor change in design can bring a cost down significantly. For instance, 1/2mm larger baguettes would have made the cost of this ring much more expensive but would not have returned that much in design. In short, there are a thousand ways to build a ring!

We were able to use Jeanne’s vision to create a fabulous looking piece that still remained within her budget.
